Surface-Marked Injection
A traditional injection technique using anatomical landmarks to identify and target the appropriate treatment area.
At Just Physio, we understand that managing acute or chronic pain can be a difficult journey. We work closely with a trusted external specialist provider to offer fast, safe, and efficient access to pain-relieving injections.
Depending on your condition and clinical assessment, injections may be delivered using either surface-marked anatomical guidance or real-time ultrasound guidance.

Real-time ultrasound imaging is used to visualise the target structure and guide the needle accurately to the treatment site.
We recognise the difficulties and the unnecessarily complicated journey patients are often asked to take in order to access pain-relieving injections. Fast access to pain relief can shorten treatment times and quickly help you get back onto the path to recovery. Our external partners operate a highly specialised "one-stop shop" clinic. Their clinical specialists are trained as musculoskeletal sonographers and qualified independent prescribers, meaning you do not require a referral from your GP. Through this service, you can receive a physical assessment, diagnostic ultrasound, and an ultrasound-guided injection all in a single visit, maintaining a first-class level of care without the wait.

Ultrasound-guided injections use real-time diagnostic ultrasound imaging to allow direct visualization of the needle tip. This ensures the medication (whether a corticosteroid or hyaluronic acid) is guided accurately to the exact target site. Ultrasound guidance also allows for highly specialized procedures, such as joint aspiration (draining excess fluid and swelling from a joint).
There is a significant body of research demonstrating that ultrasound-guided injections provide better levels of pain relief, longer-lasting effects, and improved functionality compared to injections performed without imaging (blind or surface-marked injections). Crucially, the evidence also shows that ultrasound guidance reduces the risk of trauma or misplacement of the needle, improving the safety of the procedure and minimizing the risk of adverse events associated with injection therapy.
"After months of dealing with sharp, grinding knee pain that made simple walking and stairs unbearable, I was struggling to make progress with physical therapy alone. Justin facilitated a referral to their specialist injection partner, and the difference was night and day. The one-stop setup was seamless—I had a full diagnostic ultrasound scan and an ultrasound-guided injection during the same appointment. Seeing the needle placed with pinpoint accuracy on the screen gave me huge confidence. The inflammation settled within days, finally giving me the window of relief I needed to complete my strengthening exercises."
